Who qualifies for the 30-day trial?

Hulu's free trial is available to three groups of people. The critical variable for returning subscribers is the 12-month rule - a requirement no competitor page explains clearly.

+
New subscribers
Anyone who has never had a Hulu account is fully eligible. You will see the 30-day trial offer at checkout when you select Hulu (With Ads) or Hulu (No Ads).
+
Returning subscribers - cancelled 12+ months ago
If your last Hulu subscription ended at least 12 months before today, you are eligible for the trial again. Hulu measures this from the date your last subscription actually ended, not the date you signed up.
+
Platform-billed users
If you previously signed up through Apple, Google, Roku, or Amazon and cancelled there, you may be eligible provided 12+ months have passed. Eligibility uses the same email and payment method check.
-
Returning subscribers - cancelled less than 12 months ago
If you cancelled within the past 12 months, you are not eligible for the trial. You may qualify for a $2.99/mo for 6 months win-back offer. See the returning subscribers guide for the full details.
-
Current active subscribers
If you are currently subscribed to any Hulu plan, including through a bundle or carrier perk, you cannot start a trial. You must cancel your existing subscription first.

What is included during the 30-day trial?

The trial gives full, unrestricted access to the tier you signed up for. There are no content restrictions, no watch-hour limits, and no categories hidden behind a paywall.

Hulu Originals
The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, Shogun, The Handmaid's Tale, Little Fires Everywhere, and the full originals library.
Current-season network TV
Next-day access to ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and CW episodes - one of Hulu's core advantages over Netflix.
Movie library
Thousands of movies across all genres, including theatrical releases after their streaming window.
Mobile viewing
Watch on up to 2 screens simultaneously. Mobile app for iOS and Android included. Downloads on No Ads tier.
Not included in the 30-day trial
  • Live TV channels (requires Hulu + Live TV at $82.99/mo)
  • Disney+ content (requires a Disney Bundle)
  • ESPN+ (requires a Disney Bundle or Hulu + Live TV)

The 30-day clock, explained

Hulu starts counting from the day you complete your signup, not from the day you first watch something. The calendar counts in calendar days, not 720-hour blocks.

DayWhat happens
Day 1You complete signup. Trial begins. No charge.
Days 2-29Full access. No charge.
Day 29Recommended cancel deadline (24-hour buffer before billing).
Day 30Last free day. Cancel by end of day (midnight ET) to avoid charge.
Day 31First charge processes at midnight ET if you did not cancel.

Hulu sends reminder emails before your trial ends - typically at day 25 and day 28. However, do not rely solely on these. Set your own calendar reminder. If you signed up via Apple or Google, the billing date may differ slightly due to their payment processing schedules.

Authorisation holds: when you enter your card at signup, some banks briefly show a $1 pending authorisation on your statement. This is not a real charge - it is a card validity check and will disappear within 3-5 business days.

Can I upgrade from With Ads to No Ads during the trial?

Yes. If you sign up for Hulu (With Ads) and then decide you want No Ads, you can upgrade your plan without losing your remaining trial days. The 30-day clock does not restart when you upgrade - you keep however many days are left.

The reverse is also true: if you sign up for No Ads and downgrade to With Ads, the trial continues at the lower tier. However, if you upgrade to a Disney Bundle or add Hulu + Live TV, the billing structure changes - verify the trial terms at checkout before confirming any plan change.

To change your plan: go to secure.hulu.com/account, click Manage Plan, select your new tier, and confirm. The change applies immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 30-day trial include Hulu Originals?
Yes. The trial gives full access to the tier you signed up for, including all Hulu Originals such as The Bear and Only Murders in the Building. There are no hidden content restrictions.
Can I upgrade from With Ads to No Ads mid-trial?
Yes. Upgrading from Hulu With Ads to No Ads during the trial does not restart the 30-day clock. Your remaining trial days carry over at the new tier.
What day does the trial start?
Day 1 is the day you complete signup. Day 30 is your last free day. Day 31 is when the first charge processes at midnight ET.
Does Hulu charge a temporary hold?
Some card issuers see a temporary $1 authorisation hold when you sign up. This is not a charge - it verifies the card and disappears within 3-5 business days.
Can I download content during the trial?
Yes, if you are on the No Ads tier. Hulu With Ads does not support offline downloads.
Does the 30-day trial include live TV?
No. The standard Hulu trial covers only the on-demand library. Live TV channels require Hulu + Live TV at $82.99/mo, which has a 3-day trial.
