Hulu 30-Day Free Trial: Full Rules for 2026
Hulu's 30-day free trial applies to exactly two of its five plans. Here is every rule, the exact timing mechanics, and what to watch during your month free.
At a glance
Who qualifies for the 30-day trial?
Hulu's free trial is available to three groups of people. The critical variable for returning subscribers is the 12-month rule - a requirement no competitor page explains clearly.

What is included during the 30-day trial?
The trial gives full, unrestricted access to the tier you signed up for. There are no content restrictions, no watch-hour limits, and no categories hidden behind a paywall.
- Live TV channels (requires Hulu + Live TV at $82.99/mo)
- Disney+ content (requires a Disney Bundle)
- ESPN+ (requires a Disney Bundle or Hulu + Live TV)
The 30-day clock, explained
Hulu starts counting from the day you complete your signup, not from the day you first watch something. The calendar counts in calendar days, not 720-hour blocks.
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | You complete signup. Trial begins. No charge. |
| Days 2-29 | Full access. No charge. |
| Day 29 | Recommended cancel deadline (24-hour buffer before billing). |
| Day 30 | Last free day. Cancel by end of day (midnight ET) to avoid charge. |
| Day 31 | First charge processes at midnight ET if you did not cancel. |
Hulu sends reminder emails before your trial ends - typically at day 25 and day 28. However, do not rely solely on these. Set your own calendar reminder. If you signed up via Apple or Google, the billing date may differ slightly due to their payment processing schedules.
Authorisation holds: when you enter your card at signup, some banks briefly show a $1 pending authorisation on your statement. This is not a real charge - it is a card validity check and will disappear within 3-5 business days.

Can I upgrade from With Ads to No Ads during the trial?
Yes. If you sign up for Hulu (With Ads) and then decide you want No Ads, you can upgrade your plan without losing your remaining trial days. The 30-day clock does not restart when you upgrade - you keep however many days are left.
The reverse is also true: if you sign up for No Ads and downgrade to With Ads, the trial continues at the lower tier. However, if you upgrade to a Disney Bundle or add Hulu + Live TV, the billing structure changes - verify the trial terms at checkout before confirming any plan change.
To change your plan: go to secure.hulu.com/account, click Manage Plan, select your new tier, and confirm. The change applies immediately.
